Call for Participation: Examining Code Comprehension in Today’s IDEs

We are inviting software developers to participate in our latest study exploring how state-of-the-art integrated development environments (IDEs) impact developer productivity.

Procedure

This study takes place in our eye-tracking lab at the Institute for Informatics (UZH), Binzmühlestrasse 14, 8050 Zürich for approximately 1 hour in total:

  1. Eye-Tracking Setup (10min): We will ask you to fill out a form asking for general information (e.g., programming experience in years) and calibrate the eye-tracker.
  2. Active Study (45min): You will be given up to three tasks to work on. They are about extending the Google Chrome T-Rex Dinosaur Game. You’ll mainly be using Typescript or Javascript.
  3. Post-Task Questionnaire (5min): After working on the tasks, we ask you to fill out a post-task questionnaire about your coding experience (such as perceived helpfulness and decision-making processes when using IDE features).

Reward

By participating, you contribute to advancing crucial research that addresses pressing questions about IDE tool support. In addition, you will receive 25 CHF compensation.

Data Privacy

You will be provided with a computer, no need to bring or install anything on your personal devices.

  • We only collect information provided by you through the survey forms, and the recorded anonymized eye-tracking data.
  • More information can be found on the Consent Form.
